Tanzanite is a trichroic stone which can appear altrnately as blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientatation. Tanzanite can also different under different lighting eg blues more evident under fluorescent lighting and violet more evident under incandescent illumination. In its rough state Tanzanite is reddish brown and is subjected to heat treatment to remove the brownish "veil" and bring out the blue violet of the stone.

Tanzanite is a birthstone for December.

Mohs Hardness Scale 6.5, making Tanzanite better suited to earrings and pendants. Tanzite working incredibly well with diamonds and pearls.
