The soft Arkansas stone has a medium density (400–600 grit) and is designed to provide the initial edge and the first level of polishing; this density is the most popular Arkansas stone. The hard black Arkansas stone has an extra-fine density (2,000–3,000 grit) and leaves a fine, sharp edge and a good polish on tools. The translucent Arkansas stone has an ultra extra-fine density (8,000–10,000 grit) and is ideal for achieving highly polished, razor-edge sharpness on your tools; the translucent grade is the rarest of Arkansas stones.
